Autoimmune Paleo Cookbook Review

autoimmunepaleocookbook I was super excited to get an advanced copy of The Autoimmune Paleo Cookbook by Mickey Trescott. I personally am now battling an autoimmune condition that affects my skin and from what I have found out about the condition it seems to be rare. I have had this issue for several years but honestly never thought much about it until this year. In a nutshell, when I have a “flare” it affects both my hands and feet causing them to turn very red. My flares can be caused by certain foods, intense exercise, or hot temperatures. There is still much for me to learn about the condition and I will share more as I learn more. Since my husband and I have embarked on the Autoimmune Paleo Protocol by using this book as a guide I have noticed that my flares have occurred less frequently and do not seem as noticeable (to me at least).

Since we started this protocol my husband, James (imnochef), has been cooking nonstop for us and it has been a delicious couple of weeks. My greatest achievement on this plan has been giving up the coffee. I no longer wake up craving it! Not only has it been healing my digestion, but it has given my adrenal glands I nice break. I find myself not pushing my body past its limits and making sure I’m sleeping. Two things I would abuse while drinking coffee.

So now, let’s talk about this awesome cookbook….

What Makes this Cookbook Different?

This book is unique and different from other Paleo cookbooks. Mickey has created a completely allergen-free approach to managing chronic illness with her recipes. The autoimmune protocol is much more restrictive than the typical Paleo diet and can sometimes present a challenge that leaves you saying, “Ok, what can I eat now?”, but Mickey makes the transition much easier for you! In the beginning pages of the book she explains what the autoimmune protocol is, how it works, and foods to both avoid and include. She also talks about nutrient density (one of my favorite subjects) and other lifestyle factors besides food that is important when embarking on a healing journey. She also provides additional tips and tricks on food quality, shopping, batch cooking, kitchen basics, and breakfast ideas. I found all these tips helpful.

What is the Autoimmune Protocol?

This protocol is different than the typical Paleo diet as mentioned above because it removes eggs, nuts, seeds (such as coffee), nightshade vegetables (such as tomatoes and peppers), food chemicals (such as alternative sweeteners), and NSAIDs (such as Ibuprofen). The typical Paleo approach already removes grains, dairy, legumes, and beans. For autoimmune conditions further restrictions are usually needed to help reverse the disease. Mickey explains that in addition to removing these items you instead replace them with high-quality nutrient dense foods such as pastured meats, wild-caught fish, organ meats, bone broth, fermented foods, and fruits and vegetables. I can personally tell you that I have found myself eating even more fruits and vegetables on this protocol, which is always a good thing!

Recipes We Have Tried and Love

For this review we wanted to share some of our favorite recipes by showing you how they turned out.

Moroccan Lamb Stew

This stew is found on page 174 and it was delicious. We actually substituted the lamb for veal (which is what we could find at the time) and really enjoyed it. The stew was hearty and comforting, and I loved the sweetness from the oranges in this recipe.


Cherry-Lime Popsicles

These beautiful popsicles are found on page 291. They are so fun and make for a yummy treat any time of the day. James made them, but they are also easy enough to make that I know even I could do it! James really liked this flavor, but I found the cherry to be just a little tart for me- so we also made the Mango-Coconut Popsicles on the same page and I found that the mango flavor was my personal favorite. I have kind of fallen in love with mangos since I’ve been on the protocol.

I could not recommend this cookbook enough to anyone interested in embarking on the protocol, or those just wanting to kick inflammation in the face! I personally already feel much better and I know that sticking to this way of eating the majority of the time is going to be extremely beneficial for me. So, thank you Mickey for all the hard work and time you poured into this book!

    Mangos!! (in my best camel Hump Day voice). Don’t forget about the cole slaw with the raspberry vinaigrette from page 116. And we still got to try out that raspberry cheesecake and pear caramel pie! Those looks yummy!
